Great place to grab some food! It sits next to the river and has good food. The wait was kinda long but they were busy. The staff was nice.

We love the Box Car! It is our summer tradition to stop every time we’re heading to our favorite camping spots to stop and pick up lunch! We’re from Butte, so we’re particularly fond of the pork chop sandwich’s. And of course we must have a delicious milk shake! I always remember to bring cash since credit cards won’t work there! And by the way this is Jan Rask writing this review! Not sure why it has my husbands name.

I had the bison burger and the fry bread. Both were fantastic!

Ice cream was good, just the 15 minute wait was ridiculous. Need more help for summer season. Wife said smoothe was to sweet. Didn't use real fruit. Used fruit syurp.

we were told this is where to get "the best burger in the nation!" Being from Nebraska, we took this challenge seriously. It was a darn good burger, shoe string fries and milkshake! Great atmosphere and friendly staff. Cash only.

Theres a reason this place is always so busy....from amazing burgers (try the Boxcar Burger) to the best onion rings you'll eat, to a fantastic milkshake or soft serve...this place has it all. Grab your food and relax by the creek, or take it on the road up 212, either way its good quality comfort food.

Exellent food. Terrific staff. I did order fryed mushrooms and got fryer pickles instead. Yummy way better than mushrooms.

The prices are very reasonable. They only accept cash, and their atms were down both times we ate there. The food is pretty basic. The place gets pretty busy. The outside eating area could use some work since there are several tripping hazards. There is a nice view of the river.

It took them one hour to make us four milk shakes after they forgot to fill our order. And they STILL put us behind new customers and made us wait longer. Then they forgot to put chocolate in two out of four shakes. I used to love this place, now after two bad experiences I wont be returning.

Not only is this the best burger in all of MT but it’s inside of a Northern Pacific Rail car!

Best taco salad I've ever had staff is awesome

It is a bit off the beaten path but id you have just finished crossing the Beartooth mountains stop for lunch here. Amazingly juicy burger with properly melted cheese and the right amount of toppings made for burger bliss.If you are feeling a bit bolder, go for the bison burger. Bison can be a bit dry(and is easy to overcook), but their bison burger was still juicy and cooked to perfection.

Out of stater looking for a quick bite to eat. Website states they close at 8:30pm but I come by at 8:00pm and they had a sign on the window saying “sorry but we are closed” please update your hours on the website to avoid these kind of issues!

We have been coming here for over 10 years. A great burger and terrific malts and shakes. Beautiful view of Rock Creek and once in a while you can see black bears or other wildlife.

Good fast food

I would rather be pulled over and issued a ticket for speeding than return to this place to try and ask the employee a simple question as to whether or not they served milkshakes. I’m pretty sure the law enforcement officer issuing me the ticket would be more respectful and polite than the employee I dealt with at this establishment! I won’t be back as I like to spend my money where they appreciate their customers!

One of my favorite places in Red Lodge always stopping when I'm in town love the Bison burgers a little pricey but not bad

Nice place with great deck by the river. A bit slow when there are lots of people but the staff work hard at getting things covered. I think some menu simplification would help with throughput but overall great burgers and shakes.

Every one need try this place...so greatly food and taste burger...first time come to Montana and super worth

I stopped and tried The Red box car because I had my dog with me. What a disappointment i got the wrong taco, the shell was stale, the girl short changed me $1, the special mug I bought didn't even have a lid that fit. My dog wouldn't even eat the grease soaked hard shell.

Really slow. But had good food and wasn't that expensive.

They closed an hour early with us out front looking over the menu. We have been here before and loved the black bean burger.

Best onion rings ever. Wish I could get a half order. Can never eat them all. Great burgers and fries.

Went at 7:30 for dinner, they didn't have chili dogs also out of buffalo burger. Won't recommend.

IMPORTANT; They do not take cards. Only cash. Or checks, what ever those are. 7/8 Times I have been here, they always been rude and mess up my order. Its partly on me too because i never correct them but that's 90% of the time they mess up. Also who doesnt take cards in 2020, in a city with EXTREME AMOUNT OF TOURISM. They are not enforcing Covid-19 guidelines. The two cashiers were not wearing masks and have not modified outside to accommodate for 6ft apart. Yes its outside but everyone has to come up to the narrow windows to pay. They are also not limiting the amount of people who can be there, if applicable. In short, continuously very disappointed.

Oh The Little Red Boxcar, a classic when visiting Red Lodge,MT. It's been awhile since last being back But the food is exactly what I remember. Great burgers, fries and fish. PLUS there really is nothing better than sitting next to Rock Creek (flowing next to TLRB) in the sun enjoying the food.

Good food, good atmosphere

Tasty hamburgers for a great price! Outdoor picinic seating with river flowing down below and a cool afternoon breeze. Went there 3 times during 6 months stay at yellowstone.

The prices are a little high, but is worth it. The food is amazing and would definitely recommend to anyone who is visiting Red Lodge.

The staff was over-worked and understaffed and the food was the best ever. God bless them was knocking these virus conditions out of the ballpark. Thank you.

The nachos were good. The bread on the burgers were hard and the curly fries were good too.

I've had the chicken sandwich & the cod fish sandwich. Both excellent choices. And the Huckleberry soda is great!

If you visit on the fourth expect to wait at lunch hour. Their shakes are amazing. Good restaurant

Loved the outdoor seating right on the river. Burgers were good. Was surprised they didn't stay open a little later on a Friday night of the Beartooth bike rally. (closed at 8). We missed them by 14 mins. We wanted to go back for dinner. Would recommend!
